In the Erosion and Sediment Control world we often say that “Green is Good and Sediment S___s”.  Isn’t it just amazing what a little patch of common bermudagrass has done in this bare and eroding road ditch.  Wouldn’t it be great if the entire road ditch was vegetated?

In order to control erosion on a construction site, you must first understand the erosion process. Rainfall and the surface runoff of rainfall produces four main types of erosion on a construction site: Splash Erosion occurs when the raindrop impacts the bare soil surface and dislodges soil particles. Sheet Erosion occurs either after the surface of the soil is saturated or the rainfall exceeds the infiltration rate of the soil. Then the soil detached by splash erosion and the additional soil particles detached by runoff/overland flow move downslope. Feral Pigs Go Hog Wild on Alabama

 Feral swine are one of the top nuisance animals disrupting our state, and if left unchecked, their wake of destruction will completely disrupt the Alabama we all know and love. We’re not talking lovable Porky Pig here either. You may know them as feral swine, feral hogs, wild pigs, wild hogs, or wild boars. They have many names, but we’re all referring to the same species – an angry, diseased, dangerous, and destructive one at that. Feral swine are destroying Alabama’s ecosystem at unsustainable rates.  And that’s not all, folks! Unwelcome Guests Feral hogs are  not an animal species native to Alabama . As such, they are incredibly invasive and destructive to the state’s natural ecosystem. They have no natural predators, they maintain rapid reproduction rates, and they have a naturally low mortality rate.   Today’s Erosion and Sediment Control Tip Sediment Basins require a device to dewater from the surface of the basin to remove the cleanest (less turbid) water.  This is often accomplished with a skimming device that is designed to remove the stored construction runoff over a period of 2 to 5 days.  It is important that the skimmer be installed and maintained properly. Skimmers must have a flexible connection to the rigid pipe or riser system that goes through the dam.  It should easily operate at all design elevations.  When placed on a principal spillway riser, the pipe from the skimmer to the flexible connection should be about 1.5 x the height of the riser structure. The flexible pipe outlet at the rigid pipe or riser system through the dam should be at the standing pool elevation to ensure the skimmer does not function below the required elevation.
