Erosion and Sediment Control Tip #40

The use of topsoil prior to vegetating an area is highly recommended.  Research is showing that topsoil quality can be diminished with time and depth of storage.  That is, the longer topsoil is stored, or the deeper it is stacked for storage, the beneficial biota in the topsoil can be reduced.  However, the texture of the topsoil doesn’t change.  So, if you can only store the topsoil for a long time or only have enough room to store it deep, it is still a good alternative to use for vegetation establishment.   Perry L Oakes, PE Erosion and Sediment Control Program Coordinator AL Soil and Water Conservation Committee
