Erosion and Sediment Control Tip #52

Image
The farming community often invents out of necessity. One invention that is available now commercially is a fence stretcher.  I have often wondered if we should be using a woven fence stretcher to install Type A silt fence?  A woven wire fence installed by simply unrolling and attaching to posts will sag and flex causing the silt fence to have less than the designed runoff storage.  By simply tightening the fence (not super tight but more than hand tightening), I think the fence would operate more as designed. I have also seen a home-made fence stretcher using a 2X4 and lag hooks.   Just a thought.     FYI - Our website has now been populated with Clear Water Alabama 2023 information.    https://alabamasoilandwater.gov/alesc/ Go to “Events and Training”, “Clear Water Alabama”, and “2023”     Perry L Oakes, PE Erosion and Sediment Control Program Coordinator AL Soil and Water Conservation Committee
