Don’t you just feel good when a well thought out plan comes together.  An Erosion and Sediment Control Plan is the same.  A Plan that is properly planned and executed is a thing of beauty.

Barbour County Farmer Andy McRae shows off the difference between his irrigated and non-irrigated corn. The Alabama Irrigation Initiative, launched by the Alabama Soil and Water Conservation Committee (ALSWCC), aims to address the challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns in the state of Alabama. The initiative focuses on increasing the percentage of irrigated farmland in the state by encouraging the adoption of water-saving irrigation systems and techniques. Some of these methods include drip irrigation, micro irrigation and center pivot irrigation. By using these water-efficient practices, farmers can optimize water use and reduce waste, making their agricultural practices more sustainable.   Today’s Erosion and Sediment Control Tip Sediment Basins require a device to dewater from the surface of the basin to remove the cleanest (less turbid) water.  This is often accomplished with a skimming device that is designed to remove the stored construction runoff over a period of 2 to 5 days.  It is important that the skimmer be installed and maintained properly. Skimmers must have a flexible connection to the rigid pipe or riser system that goes through the dam.  It should easily operate at all design elevations.  When placed on a principal spillway riser, the pipe from the skimmer to the flexible connection should be about 1.5 x the height of the riser structure. The flexible pipe outlet at the rigid pipe or riser system through the dam should be at the standing pool elevation to ensure the skimmer does not function below the required elevation.   Although non-native grasses such as Pensacola Bahia, Bermuda and Tall Fescue are very important in our erosion control planting for vegetative cover, we professionals should be aware of other non-native plants (shrubs and trees) that could be considered highly invasive to our environment. Are the shrubs or trees being used on your jobsite considered to be invasive?  How many invasive plants can you see in this picture?
